About Me

BOTH SIDES
Angela Malagon · The Jilted Recruiter

I’ve Been On Both
Sides Of This Desk.
That’s The Whole Point.

Hiring truth for the displaced professional. No scripts. No fluff. Just the facts.

Who I am

The system is broken.
I can prove it.

You were laid off after years of strong performance. Or you’re applying to roles you’re overqualified for and hearing nothing back. Here’s the part nobody puts in the rejection email: it isn’t you.

I’m Angela Malagon, a Career Strategist with 15+ years recruiting talent for companies such as Cisco, Google, and Wells Fargo. I sat in the debrief meetings. Not as the person making the final call, but as the one hiring managers turned to for a straight read on candidates. I watched resumes get buried by an ATS before a human ever opened them. I heard “culture fit” used to cover decisions that were about something else entirely.

Then I got laid off. More than once.

One of those stretches ran more than 18 months. I ran the same search I’d spent 15 years watching other people run, and found out how little of what I knew from the inside ever makes it to the outside. Being the person in the room where candidates get discussed, and then the person trying to get into that room, is exactly what this brand is built on.

The recruiting career

job searching myself

For 15+ years I recruited for some of the most demanding companies in the industry, across corporate and business functions: HR, finance, operations, legal, marketing, and communications. Mass hiring events. Senior executive searches. Hiring managers with very specific opinions about exactly what they wanted and very little patience for anything else.

I know what makes a resume land. I know why a strong candidate gets screened out. And I know the difference between a candidate who lost the job because of their background and one who lost it because of a bias nobody in the room was willing to say out loud.

Why this exists

Why I built
The Jilted Recruiter

After my layoff, I was on the candidate side of the process for the first time in over a decade. The market I found didn’t look anything like the one I’d been recruiting in. It looked like a machine built to screen people out efficiently and explain nothing.

ATS systems burying qualified resumes before a human saw them. “Overqualified” rejections that were really about salary. Interview questions engineered to surface things nobody’s allowed to ask about directly. Silence where a decision used to be.

I knew how every piece of it worked from the inside. Most people on the outside had no idea, and that gap is expensive. It costs interviews, offers, and income people had already earned.

So I built The Jilted Recruiter to close it. This is where I hand over what I know about how hiring actually works: ATS mechanics, the interview traps, where your negotiation leverage really sits, and the ageism patterns that get denied and practiced at the same time.

If the search isn’t working, you deserve to know what’s happening on the other side of it.

Who this is for

You’re in the right place if…

  • You’ve been laid off and the search isn’t going the way it should
  • You’re getting interviews and not converting them, and nobody will tell you why
  • Your resume is disappearing into systems you can’t see, and you want to know how they actually work
  • You have an offer or a final round coming and you want to walk in prepared, not hopeful
  • You’re weighing a career pivot and need someone to tell you honestly whether it’s viable
  • You suspect age is a factor and you want to know how to counter it, not just complain about it
  • You’ve heard AI can help your search and have no idea what’s actually worth using
  • You’re done with career advice that could have been written for anyone
  • You want someone who has been on both sides of the desk, not a coach with a script
What makes this different

What you actually get

Recruiter-side truth

I’ve been in the rooms where your candidacy gets discussed. You get what’s actually said in there, not the version that makes it into the rejection email.

No generic advice

Everything is built around your background, your target roles, and the market you’re actually competing in. Not a framework. Not a template.

Ageism fluency

When age is the real issue, I can name the pattern and coach you around it, defensively and strategically. It’s a specialty, not a guess.

I’ve been where you are

Multiple layoffs. One search that ran past 18 months. I’m not theorizing about this market. I job searched in it.

Honest feedback

I’ll tell you what’s actually holding you back, not what’s easiest to hear. You deserve the truth more than you deserve comfort.

Corporate function depth

HR, finance, operations, legal, marketing, communications. The functions I actually recruited for, not a general-purpose script.
